I think it used to cost a shilling (5p) to visit the doctor, which was an awful lot out of little wages. The real problem with the NHS was that the funding was based on the use that people made of doctors and hospitals BEFORE it was introduced. It's not exactly rocket science to work out that people will make more use of something that is "free" than something they have to pay for, is it. It's been going wrong ever since .....
