Turns out there is quite a bit of history to that Grand Union flag. In the early stages of the American Revolution, it symbolized both the thriteen colonies and the wish to reach a compromise with the mother country. There were a number of flags in use at this time, but it was probably flying in Philadelphia as the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776.
Also, very similar to one used from 1707 by the East India Company!
