[West Ender]

I remember the PoW camp at Stanhill when I was very small. I'm not sure if the Italians were still there, I think it was Germans. They used to whittle toys out of pieces of wood and some of them used to be given tokens, instead of money, and were allowed out of the camp. They used to go in my aunt's bakers shop in West End.

I also remember Entwistle, back in the days of steam trains. My dad was in business in Bolton and travelled by train from Blackburn until 1953 when he got his first post-war car. I occasionally went with him on a Saturday and I know the train used to pass through it. There was a big water tank there, next to the station, where they used to refill the boilers.
