All he wanted was a date..........

Love email scores a date ... with infamy

Alan Hamilton, London July 26, 2006

ALL he wanted was a date. But since Joseph Dobbie's romantic email to Kate Winsall proposing coffee at the Tate Modern went global, his home and mobile phones have become so hot he has had to change the numbers.

They met at a party. He was smitten, but drunk. In the cold light of relative sobriety he sent her a 500-word reverie apologising for his inebriation and declaring that he was listening to his heart. Her smile was the freshest of his special memories; she made time stand still. She was unimpressed and forwarded the message to her sister Jane, with the terse comment: "I met this man on Saturday."
Her sister gave the message a wider audience, under the heading: "How to ask a girl out (in a roundabout way)." She appended her own observation: "Oh my God." It has since circulated the globe.
Mr Dobbie had written: "If you are half as intelligent and aware as I believe you to be, I am sure that you will find what I have written, in the very least, sweet. If I am twice as lucky as I would dare to hope you will find this charming." The email included his phone numbers.
Reactions from those who have read the electronic billet-doux have ranged from "What a smoothie" to "I'm still cleaning up the vomit chunks" to "Well, that's his life ruined".
Mr Dobbie, in his late 30s, runs a web design company in Berkshire, west of London.
He was unrepentant yesterday: "I would like to have a relationship with someone who valued that kind of effort. I need somebody who is genuine, romantic and sincere, and unafraid to be those things."
Despite all the attention, the email has not yet provided him with an alternative date. "I can't imagine anyone saying yes under the spotlight," he said.
But he has had an email from Ms Winsall. It was an apology.
