My old xp [pro] was on when i bought the pc so was 'activated' already, tho took 9 months to get the pop ups.
I dunno i just prefer it as it ran better & had quirky things that was handy, like desktop clean-up so it tidies up the un-necessary instead of being in view home dont do that
