Yes, the wet nurse had often fed several of her own children and in some instances was still feeding them. Breastmilk is produced by stimulation, the more the baby feeds the more milk is produced. Many women give up breastfeeding because they say that they don't have enough milk. In truth, there are only about 2% of women worldwide who are unable to lactate due to rare medical conditions. Many women who give up feeding in the West are merely experiencing a baby growth spurt. During a growth spurt the baby will demand to be fed for up to 22 hours out of 24... This can go on for about 48 hours leaving the mother knackered and feeling that she mustn't have enough milk, therefore, she gives up....
Growth spurts happen at roughly 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3-4 months old...
