Gambling like alcohol has been the curse of mankind since time immemorial and caused more family misery than any other activity. Sadly it will continue that way until there is just one person left on this planet.
So opening up a super casino will only encourage people to spend money that they cannot afford in the hope that they can improve their lot with a big win. A bit like the Lottery really or the football pools of yesteryear.
Five years ago when I lived on the Roman Road Estate, Blackburn I would draw my pension from the post office and witness many single mums and those on the dole get their benefits and immediately spend at least $10 on scratch cards. Some, having not won anything, would buy more and more.
Fortunately the catchments area for a super casino will not extend to the whole country so its impact on those living at or below the bread line will only be small and local.
However there are enough ways to gamble as it is so a new super casino is not needed.
