Re: The who and a few more...

Try Velvet Underground and Nico as a place to start with the Velvets. It has such staggeringly beautiful opuses on it as Sunday Morning, All Tomorrow's Parties, Black Angel Death Song and many others.

The Jam as said previously All Mod Cons or Setting Sons, mind you anything other than the second album is rather brilliant.

The Doors try the first eponymously titled album, or the second one (Strange Days).

Joy Division anything, I do mean anything, they will steal your soul and leave you wanting more.

As for Hawkwind well I would try any compilation as they have released about 30 albums. But anything with the original version of Motorhead on it and a fair amount from Quark Strangeness and Charm.

Hope this helps

Other bands I would consider looking at would be Echo and the Bunnymen (first 4 albums)
Also buying a decent Punk compilation, or John Peel's Tribute should give you a few pointers.

Hope this helps.
