I don't ever remember being afraid of going anywhere when I was a kid. I went to the shop in the dark. If there were groups of kids hanging around they weren't frightening. What gang rivalry there was tended to stay between the gangs and didn't spill over onto innocent people in my experience. There weren't knives being used on people the way they are now. I remember the first time we heard of someone being killed my Mum was horrified and said it was "like Chicago and Al Capone" - I dread to think what she'd make of it now.

Some people these days give the impression of being lazy and having no intention of working. Mods, rockers, teddy boys all had jobs. They bought their drainpipes and brothel creapers, their leathers and bikes, their Vespas and suits.
