What annoys me more than anything about this story is the quote from the HMP "spokeswoman" saying that the prison service recognised that the festive season could be difficult for inmates and efforts were made to minimise distress.

Why shouldn't it be difficult for the sods and why should any effort at all be made to minimise their distress?

That little statement shows all too well just where the authorities' sympathies lie.
