Re: sell by date ?
The sell by date is just that – a date after which the shop cannot sell the item unless it is advertised as out of date and separate from the ‘in date’ product. The really important date is the ‘use by’ date but even that is only a guide-line for the buyer. If the food is used after that date they have no come back on the producer/shop if the customer becomes ill.
As WillowTheWhisp has already stated the food doesn’t suddenly become bad and inedible one second after midnight of the day in question.
I use the ‘sell by and use by’ dates as a means of determining how long the product has been on the shelf. I will delve at the back of the shelf to find the newest date, much to the annoyance of some shopkeepers, particularly with bread, tea cakes, cakes and the like.
I prefer to use my nose and eyes to determine if the food is fit to eat.
The only exception is with medicines but then I’ve never had an ‘out of date’ medicine because they have either all been used as directed for the full term or on the odd occasion when told to discontinue using one medicine the residue goes back to the chemist.
