I liked the Housemartins stuff & the Beautiful South made some very good songs.
They made songs that stick in your mind. They may not be great technically or moan about tax credit system in deepest darket Peru, but songs like that have a special ability to take you to a specific memory in your life, which is what I look for in a good song.
