Yes in Protestant churches, there was no religious significance to women covering their heads with hats or bonnets. It wasurely a social/fashion trend.

In the past if you couldn't afford a hat or bonnet, you were looked down upon. In Glasgow they used to be called 'the hairies', and people used to abuse them in the street.
