live music in Hyndburn

O.K. bear with me , maybe I'm an old 'codger' but I'm just wondering how young folks get going in the music industry in the UK these days, in my day groups and artists made their name on the touring circuit , travelling to different dates and playing in crap clubs up and down the country night after night to gain a following, these days it seems all it needs is to get a spot on some "Oppertunity Knocks" style show to gain fame, only this time instead of Hughie Green we have Simon Cowell .
All the 'record' companies are vetching about the decline in sales , but my question is .....where are the 'new' decent artists, or why aren't established acts releasing new material instead of compilations of greatest hits ?.
Maybe Lindsey from the Music Zone can answer me , but when i was in my local Borders Music the other day the only thing I bought was Dean Martin's Greatest hits , (Doh) nothing else got my attention (prefer Rod the Mod to the American Standards incarnation)
I have young folks who I work with and some of them have never seen a live act unless its been some blockbuster tour in a giant stadium, it seems local clubs and bars no longer have up and comers .
I'm not so old that I am out of touch , Billie Joe Armstrong from the group Green Day I have known for years , since he played at a diner where his Mom was a waitress in the north bay (at 16/17 he was crap , but I still threw a dollar in the tip jar) and know that they toured endlessly across the US and built an act and I even them allowed them to shoot, free of charge a video in my steel plant before they hit the big time , his Mom was worried out of her mind about where he was.
In my day even the backwater that Accrington is could provide live music acts at the Con, Cavern, or Greyhound pub , my question is where do the local kids see live acts.
Thanks
