I think to break into the music industry these days is a hard thing to do unless you are either manufactured or some kind of one hit wonder act that a record company sees some financial gain from. For aspiring new bands it is still the same game of 'doing the circuit' and gaining a loyal following and then pushing out to the cities to gain more attention. It is not as easy now, because record companies are no longer willing to 'take a risk'. What is good for bands now is the internet with sites like Myspace music where bands can promote themselves with ease and get their music heard all over the world.
There is a lot of good unsigned talent locally with a vast array of genres. Places like the Attic and The Adelphi often showcase some good bands / performers (and some bad one too). From what I hear, there are plans for more events promoting local unsigned music around the local area over the next few months.
It’s just a shame that it is so much easier for bands to go and churn out someone else's proven hits than it is to showcase their own original material.
