I played cowboys and injuns as a child and had toy guns and bows and arrows (with suction cups on the end) and my friend had one of those plastic knives where the blade retraced into the handle and it looked like you'd really stabbed the person but none of us grew up wanting to do it for real. We knew the difference between reality and imagination.
I was quite surprised to see my daughter's English literature is all full of misery, violence and death. I'm sure we didn't have such morbid subjects in school when I was a teenager.
