The breed was originally the German Shepherd but in WW1 anything remotely German was deemed unacceptable in this country. Prince Louis of Battenberg changed his name to Mountbatten (literal translation) to sound English and the German Shepherd became the Alsation (Alsace was a German/French region which, at the time, was claimed by France). It's only since after WW2 that the original name started to gain ground again. The Mountbattens, however, don't seem to want to revert to their German roots!
