its technically possible but not something you want to/need to/should do, its either there and working or not(as in your case)

another way of checking teh disk is OK/knackered is if anyone you know has an external HD caddy(waves!) that you can put it in and then plug into say a shiny laptop. I can't get the caddy up to you at the moment(lack of time) but if you can collect from ours your welcome to borrow it
