They are designed to be used on an electronics assembly shop floor so that any ESD (static) disipates into the floor. We have the option of boots or so called steel toe capped ESD trainers which are worse than the boots. Many of us have tried to get away with wearing what we feel comfortable in only to get a strip torn of us and forced back to there issued ones.
