Perhaps he's listening to the Archers, rather than watching, and Ambridge is a bit like Darwen.
Coronation Street, the daddy of all soaps, came out of the kitchen sink film school of the late fifties/early sixties. It was as gritty, realistic, and shocking for the time.
I've watched Corrie since the age of three, in 1968, and will continue to do so. It's the Dickens of the age.
The current storyline about the grubbiness of prostitution, is fascinating.
