Ask the police how you can set up security within legal guidelines so that you have proof. You can email them and make enquiries you know so you could keep the reply email as proof if they tell you how you can do it, so if any smart ass gets caught and tries to say you shouldnt have filmed them you can say the police advised you to.

Also ask the police if it would be safe to use the razor wire under the rims idea . Its worth a try if it saves your plants from being uprooted.
