I think that the dignitaries should be made to take part and decorate their own float and make costumes etc (out of their own money not public purse).
Local companies should be pressured by their employees to take part. Many of the bigger companies who claim to be proud to be from Accrington were not present and to my knowledge never have been. Accrington Stanley are always represented by their supporters but never have their own. Accrinton Cricket Club have never been present and are really struggling for funding and awareness at the moment. None of the local schools bar one (I think a Primary School from Huncoat had any presence. Until organisations like these start to show an interest then how can they expect the town to show up enmasse?
I remember standing on Plantation St 20 yearsr ago when the likes of Rod Hull or Jon Pertwee were on the floats. The pavements even up there used to be five or six deep such was the interest from the community. I know times are different and there was bad weather on saturday, but it would be nice to think that these occasions could still be well supported.
