I buy my license from a local shop now but before then it was always the Post Office, right back to the days when we had to have a license to listen to the radio.

Not quite right entwisi. You need a TV license if you have equipment that is capable of receiving TV broadcasts from anywhere or by any means.
It is the government that issues the TV license and part of the proceeds go to fund the BBC. Although it is the BBC that is charged with collecting the license fees and keeping track of those without one.
If the BBC didn’t exist or the government stopped funding the BBC and it had to survive as the commercial channels do by showing adverts, we would still have to buy a TV license. So those people agitating for no TV license have no chance of success.
Finally to those people complaining about the TV license fee, be careful what you wish for.
