I don't think it should be banned. I think it's good to have a historical perspective on things and see how people and attitudes have changed. It should be seen in context of when it was written, just as Shakespeare is seen in the context of when it was written.
As for Alf Garnett and his ilk. I've said it before but I don't mind repreating myself. To me the humour doesn't come from laughing WITH the bigot at the people he belittles, but at laughing AT him for his narrow minded ludicrous perception of reality.
