Mary Queen of Scots was the first Royal bride to wear white. It was really only made fashionable when Queen Victoria got married in white to Prince Albert. Throughout the nineteenth century it wasn't de rigeur to marry in white, you could go up the aisle in any colour except black or red, which signified mourning or prostitution respectively.
It was really only in the twentieth century that white became the colour of choice for most brides.
