I'm not going to be an appologist for modern art, mainly because there really is no such thing. The very concept of modernism means that it constantly changes. What was modern and contemporary at the begining of the twentieth century is now quite literally antique and dated.

The very first time a blank canvas was exhibited, it created shock and outrage, now it's just passé and derivative.

You could ask yourself how has the canvas been painted? With a small brush, with visible brush marks, or is it perfectly smooth as if it's been sprayed? Is it really white, or are there subtle differences of shade? The painter could be giving all kinds of subtle messages, or he could just be being pretentious. Who knows, or cares?

(I'm sorry Papa Lazarou is frightening you. Don't be afraid, he won't bite.)
