I think this is an age thing, more than a size issue Willow.

When you start searching for jeans with elasticated waists, the next step will be ordering snuggly, velcro fastening shoes 'which are as comfortable as slippers', which are advertised in the back of the Sunday papers.

Jeans were never designed to feel comfortable, just hard wearing, and I think your choice of combat trousers is a good one.
