Re: Oops, A Clanger
About 30 yrs ago I was living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and one winter night, when the temp had plunged to about -40c, I decided to drive to the mall to pick up some film for my camera. Because it was so cold, I decided to leave the car running, lock it, do my quick shop, open my car with my spare set of keys and drive home. Good thinking, eh. Just before I took off from my car, I noticed, sitting on my dash ... you guessed it, my spare set of keys. Shoot! Ah well off to the mall to phone Russ, a friend of mine who owned a towing company, and could break in to any car with his slim jim. Russ said he would be a while; no problemo, into the mall restaurant for a beer and a burger. Russ arrived, and asked where the car was. I told him that it was running and that we would be able to find it because of the plume of exhaust rising thro' the ice fog (you have to experience this to really appreciate it). Out to the lot .... lo and behold, the lot had filled and it was so achingly cold that all the shoppers had left their cars running (we were not so green 30 yrs ago). All we could see were plumes of exhaust rising thro' the still, frigid air. Russ, knowing my peculiarities when it came to filling my tank with gas, asked how much I had in my tank. I told him that I was pushing empty. He pointed to the left, and said, "that must be your car." And it was. The only one in the lot not running .... out of gas. We went to the car, opened it, put in some gas from the can that Russ always carried .... but it was so damned cold that the pig wouldn't start ... it was a Ford, I should have expected it. By this time we were so cold, that we headed back to the mall .... met some friends, had a few brewskies ... so many in fact that Russ decided not to drive, he went to his truck to turn it off .... gone, stolen .... somehow I got the blame for this ... But that's enough. I had my car towed home, plugged in the block heater and all was cool. They found Russ' truck abandoned by the 51st Street bridge and all ended fairly happily and really drunkenly.
