I felt really guilty and did a quick poll at the bowling alley. The general opinion was that we should forget about it. My Scottish partner agrees. I did buy five euros worth of raffle tickets for a charity draw to salve my conscious though. Who is right?

I'd have done the same. There was nobody there to take your money, you didn't know how long they were going to be. Who knows how long you could have been standing there and why should you? If they want paying they need to have somebody present to take your money or they shouldn't expect to get it.
