He was given a piece of silver (50p piece) yes..as good luck...and I know it always to have been done when I was a young kid and growing up but not having lived in other parts of the uk I dont know if this is strictly a scottish thing or not..but good on your neighbour and you can tell her I done the same thing..
suppose its kinda a like a christening piece..if its boy being christened then a girl would get the gift ( bit of silver) and vice versa.
