If I was strongly against this issue I would have gone to my local area council meeting.
If I was lame I would have gone in my wheelchair.
If I was sick then ok I couldn't have gone but I would have asked someone to go on my behalf.
If I was supposed to be at work at 7 O'clock in the evening or whatever time the meetings are then I would have swapped shifts with someone or booked the shift off so that I could go to the meeting.
If you feel strongly you'll find a way.
It was in the Observer a bit back that this issue met with a positive response at the area meetings.
