You are quite correct Margaret , hotels do do this, think they do it away from the wall so guests can tear it easily and not waste too much, but the folding is just for presentation.
'Tis a serious question and one been asked many times, presume also by the manufacturers, after all difficult to ask how you use it,etc., isn't it ?..
As for me .. well, mine is on the floor at the moment. last holder dropped off .. mainly due to son and mates leaning on it to balance, whilst other hand was probably busy holding something else.
I have bought a new one, at great expense, but has not been attached to tiles as yet, as do not know how to screw into tiles. New shower riser rail still waiting to be put up for same reason
If it were up, would put next to wall, as looks neater.
