Right firstly if its hardware(which it sounds like) what diference is a new media player going to make.

First thing, check your BIOS hasn't dropped to a lower spec mode ( there are a few different ones some a lot slower than others )

Check DMA is enabled for the drive as well. DVD requires a LOT more data than audio or pictures so any slowdown is likely to be 'flow' releated.

The fact that your dvd takes a while to initially load suggests that the laser may be a little dirty or that the firmware driving it is wandering off track a little. Again, the error correction of audio/data is a lot easier than DVD video to perform.

You mention that you don't think its memory then quote CPU %, these are totally unrelated. You can have a PC whose memory is nearly full but at 1% CPU and vice versa a CPU at 100% with cart loads of RAM left. You need to check both. Let us know your PC spec so we can advise further (CPU speed, Installed RAM, free space on HD, Graphics card make/model)
