Re: school letters
My 2 are at primary school and the teachers put any letters in the children's book bags for them to bring home.
I don't think it would be feasible to expect teachers to catch every parent after school to tell them any news verbally. There would always be some they didn't manage to catch and those people would say 'why didn't they send a letter home?'

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs, cackling and telling me
'You'll be next.' They stopped when I started doing the same to them at funerals.
