It was a tomcat,Garfield,and he regularly puffed himself up and hissed in corners where the rest of us saw nothing.He was no softie either he took someone's homing pigeon out of the action in about 1989!I buried it in the garden and felt guilty for weeks;it could have been yards from home and Garfield got it![He had a seagull too!]
