I think all everyone wants is a day to celebrate who they are & where they are from. A day to be English & allowed to be proud of it! It doesn't matter what day of the week St Patrick's day is in Ireland - it's a bank holiday. Why? Cos their allowed to be proud of who they are. Just because there are a few bank holidays around this time of year is no excuse. Us Brits don't get half as many national holidays as most European countries anyway. Besides - wouldn't you rather be off at a time it maybe nice weather & you could do something. What would you do in Oct/Nov - Christmas shopping???
