Re: Tesco Poll (With Poll this time!)
Anyone remember the film RoboCop?
How we laughed in the late 80's about a company controlling everything.
But look at now, I don't think there's anything you can't buy from Tesco (apart from specialist items and, let's be honest, they have to be bought on the internet now), even mortgages, insurance, mobile phone plans, yadda yadda.
Accrington already has : Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Netto and that place that used to be KwikSave.
Pretty soon, there will be only supermarkets and large chain retailers for anything else.
When we lose the freedom of choice, you watch the prices rise when there are no alternatives. Yes, there could be a supermarket "price war", I don't mind them selling groceries, but they want to sell EVERYTHING. And most of their "non core" offerings (Electricals etc) are not good quality, but simply cheap.
There's no way to stop it, but I remember when it used to be a joy to shop in Accrington, I think the only shop left that is independant and has class is Marsdens on Abbey Street.
Another Tesco, to match the 2 in haslingden and 1 in Blackburn. What's the big deal?
It'll happen if Tesco wants it to, as they have the money and muscle.
But I've started shopping in the market for meat and veg. The produce is better and cheaper, but put another Supermarket in the equation...
I suppose this rant isn't against Tesco in general, more the lack of choice we now have without going on the internet, where every town has the same shops with the same things.
I don't know why the government hasn't opened supermarkets where everyone gets minimum wage and everything is run at cost (plus Vat, we can't get away from that). The money will be in our pockets instead of the supermarkets.
Convenience has a lot to answer for :-)
