I think that teachers are just trying to be sensitive to those who don't live with Mummy and Daddy by addressing their carers as parents.

The term 'parents' is often used more by middle class children as well I've found, so perhaps they want to stop children sounding common! My mum tries to stop me saying 'nehhyt' (haha) instead of 'nowt' then 'nothing' instead of 'nowt'. Its not that she hates the fact we're from Lancashire, she just prefers me to sound 'proper' if you understand what I mean?
She doesn't BAN the words, she just tries to teach me better ways of speaking lol, which is good because the southerners get confused when you start using Lanky Language haha.
