When I was at school they used to say 'parent or guardian', and I went to a conservative (with a small 'c') catholic school - perhaps we were ahead of our time and didn't know it!

I went to a catholic school as well. Thats obviously why I don't understand the fuss, parents were parents, guardians were guardians. I dont think we bothered ceebrating fathers day at school, though I remember making mothers day stuff.
I dont think I found much opportunity to talk about either parent either, though I would be interested to know what they would do about readers if that was the case, as early reading books teach the words 'mum' and 'dad'.
