Walter Crook took over, first as coach, then as manager, but he too resigned in February 1953 after clashing with some of the directors in a season that ended with Stanley finishing last in the Third Division (North). The season ended with full-back Bill Robinson being murdered by a jealous husband. Chairman Pilkington stepped down after 22 years.
