I shall keep my ear to the ground derek as I work with within the world of plumbing/gas fitters and suchlike, I speak to more than a few fitters on a daily basis..I am back in on monday and will speak to them then...
although it does sound like they knew what they were after as your average thief wouldnt know what to do with a gas analizer etc...
