Yes it is scary, the problem with anything like this is that it costs money, and until people die then nothing will get done.
But to put this in perspective, the aircraft types that are affected, thankfully are few. In the case of the 757 it's no longer in production. Remember that flying is safer than the drive to the airport.

Yes BG it does cost money, but not doing anthing about it until people are killed cannot be acceptable in this day and age. As you say overall air travel is safer than going to the airport by car, the only trouble is when a plan goes down hundreds are killed in one go, and that
IS very very scary.
