Most of my tutors work in research within the university and regularly have articles published in the law journals, they're aren't just tutors. In fact I don't know of any which haven't had some sort of academic article published in the law journals, but the head of our law school is massively respected in corporate law an works internationally.
What would you even class as a 'proper job'? I can't think of anything I would rather be doing right now, even if I have been sat up all night writing case notes. It's all very worthwhile when you can see justice being done, and it very nearly always is done regardless of what the daily express might tell you.
