It is, but at my lad's school I seem to be the only parent who does it (perhaps there are some others that I don't see 'cos I'm late a lot). I stand behind him and let him do all the work. He even waves traffic on that stops for him (thinking they are doing him a favour) after a scare early on when I had to grab him as someone overtook the stopped car- on a zigzag!

My big bugbear is someone who steps into traffic within a 30 second walk of a pedestrian crossing. I see it all the time from my vantage point at the shop- in fact, if you'd been watching on the webcam 30 seconds ago, you'd have seen an idiot mum/guardian crossing at the double roundabout in Great Harwood centre, when there was a perfectly serviceable pelican crossing right next to her. My blood boils when it's someone who's endangering the lives of others- not just themselves.
On two occasions I've actually stopped and said: "Are you stupid?" tends to tarnish the ambiance when you say it to a neighbour though

hehe- me too. I get upset with parents who drag their kids across between parked cars without showing them how to check. they are not just endangering their lives at that moment, but in the future when the kid runs out thinking traffic isn't something to be scared of.
