I saw the cavalcades going past this morning about seven-ish, as I was walking down a road in Wapping called the Highway, which runs between the City and 'Docklands'. Cops were everywhere, blocking off side street entrances and exits, many with guns. They were coming through every 2 minutes - armoured Limo's, 4 X 4's full of close protection, people carriers for the plebs, and in some cases an ambulance following up behind. The organisation was supurb...something the Met, under the command of ex-Accy cop Sir Paul, can well be well proud of.

Until, that is, I came to the Texaco Garage, just opposite the Times Editorial offices and by a slight bend on the road. A perfect ambush position ( for those who know about these things). There sat on the wall, was a very swarthy looking indivdidual with a large canvas bag at his feet. Sticking out of this bag was about 2ft of pipe, 4" diameter. The nearest cop was some distance away.

"Bloody Hell", I thought, "It's the back end of an RPG!".......and the cops didn't appear to have spotted it! Just as I was working out what to do, the guy bent down to open the bag...this was getting hot, very hot.

I looked up, and lo and behold, there coming up the road was the French President and his entourage.

"Good Luck, mate", I whispered, and walked on.

This is a true story. Well, almost.
