In case you lot wonder where your council tax is going, other than in councillor's expenses, this is the answer:-

Hyndburn and Pendle council chiefs' 'staggering' pay rises (From Lancashire Telegraph)

I suppose you can argue over the base salary level, but I simply cannot see how the 7.1% rise can be defended in today's climate.
