I don't know why the name was changed.
Perhaps because it was supposed to be semi-autobiographical, and because the television programme would reach a wider audience, she wanted to distance herself from the main character.
That didn't really work though, as the national press descended on Accrington, to ask her mother if what had been shown was true.
