Maybe it's because I'm not as old as you assume, but I can certainly tell the difference between MP3 and lossless files. MP3s at whatever bitrate always sound 'closed in' and lack separation to my ears. Sometimes it comes down to the limits of the source material (CDs aren't all that great to be honest), but a good lossless source played on some decent equipment has noticably clearer separation and a generally more open sound.
Using a 500gb harddrive purely for music, space isn't really an issue anyway.
