There are some individuals who have the female chromosomes (XX) but have 'streak ovaries'(gonadal dysgenesis)......these individuals do not produce the necessary hormones which would induce the development of secondary sexual characteristics......they are female, but cannot reproduce.......there are other Chromosomal abnormalities which can lead to ambiguity about their gender.......Many of them can be proved by taking DNA samples......only if these prove ambiguous would further intervention be required, and much of this can be done these days, by non-invasive procedures.

It is a shame for this young woman to be subjected to such harsh media attention.
