Wood burners are very common here in France, and yes it is advised that you use a flue liner. Installing one is not rocket science, the big problem comes with the height of the chimney. If using a company and it is over 3 m(I think) high then they are required to use scaffolding. If you are doing it on your own property then that doesn't apply.
You do not state whether the figure of £800 includes anything in addition to the liner.
Wood burners here cost anywhere between 400 to 700 euros. There is a differential between inset and freestanding ones. I installed my own free standing one and the flue liner as well. The chimney is about 11 m - installation is a doddle, drop a weighted rope down and then pull the liner up with somene feeding in from the bottom - suggest you get more than one quotation and ask for the quotation to be itemised.
